For most people they're considered safe, but a few real risks worth knowing. The adhesive can irritate sensitive or reactive skin, so a patch test on the inner arm is smart if you've had reactions to bandages or tapes. Wearing a saturated patch too long can trap moisture against the skin and cause irritation. Patches with active ingredients like salicylic acid or tea tree oil can dry or sting, especially if your skin is already compromised. They shouldn't be used on broken or bleeding skin, eczema, or rosacea-prone areas, since the occlusion can flare those conditions. And applying a hydrocolloid patch to a deep cyst won't damage anything but won't do much either, that stage calls for a dermatologist.
