Cycle Syncing Skincare: Tailor Your Routine to Your Menstrual Cycle

Cycle Syncing Skincare: Tailor Your Routine to Your Menstrual Cycle

Updated Feb 4, 2026

Didn’t think you’d still be facing blemishes as an adult? Thanks, hormones. Fluctuating levels of estrogen, progesterone, and testosterone throughout your cycle are responsible for the blemishes that break out like clockwork on a monthly basis. These shifts are also why many people turn to cycle syncing skincare to stay ahead of changes driven by hormonal fluctuations.

Estrogen stimulates the production of collagen, elastin, and hyaluronic acid—essentially the MVP of hormones for great skin. Progesterone stimulates sebaceous glands to overproduce sebum, causing skin to swell and compress your pores. Testosterone, like progesterone, triggers excess sebum, clogging your pores and providing a rich environment for bacteria to thrive.

For Acne Awareness Month, we’re taking a deep dive into the phases of your menstrual cycle to help you better understand the phases of your skin so you can break the cycle of hormonal blemishes and find a routine that naturally aligns with your body and overall health.

How to Track Your Skin Across the Menstrual Cycle

Your skin changes more often than you think, and the small shifts throughout your cycle can reveal a pattern if you know where to look. Tracking helps you understand when your complexion tends to look extra glowy, when texture appears uneven, or when your skin feels drier or more reactive. Once you spot these rhythms, choosing the right clean skincare products for each week becomes second nature and helps you focus on what your skin truly needs.

Notice Patterns

A little consistency goes a long way. You can keep things simple while still getting real insight into what your skin is doing behind the scenes.

Try noting changes such as:

  • When your skin looks more radiant or full
  • Days when your complexion appears dull
  • Weeks when your face feels oilier or more textured
  • Moments when your skin seems more reactive than usual
  • Times when pores look more refined or more noticeable

Use a journal, the notes app on your phone, or your cycle-tracking app to log these updates. Over time, these entries help you sync your routine so your skin appears balanced and at its best all month long. Staying consistent with cycle syncing skincare in a way that’s easy to start and easier to maintain.

Phase 1: Menstruation

Hormones

Estrogen and progesterone levels are at their lowest point, whereas testosterone is relatively higher during your period. Levels of prostaglandin, a hormone that helps the healing process, are higher and can increase your pain sensitivity.

Skin

Without the help of estrogen, your skin may have a harder time retaining moisture. It feels dry, and dull lines and wrinkles become more prominent. Skin feels more tender and reactive as its barrier function is impaired.

Tips

  • Nourish with Hydration - Packed with ultra-moisturizing fruit extracts, our Hydration Facial Sheet Mask is basically the equivalent of guzzling a full bottle of water right after hot yoga. Or treat yourself to a deeply nourishing Collagen + PDRN face mask to help skin look smoother and refreshed.
  • Strengthen Your Barrier - Don’t forget the third step in the daily 3-Step Miracle Clear System: Barrier Cream. After cleansing and toning, massage our barrier cream for the face, powered by strengthening Minerice Enzyme Complex, to prevent blemishes and support your skin health. Ideal for those using products for blemish-prone skin.

Phase 2: Follicular

Hormones

Estrogen is on the rise, peaking between the tenth and thirteenth day of your menstrual cycle, which means increased production of collagen, elastin, and hyaluronic acid. Progesterone and testosterone levels remain lower, increasing towards ovulation.

Skin

The ideal hormonal balance for glowy skin—sebum levels are reduced, and hyaluronic acid and collagen production are stimulated. This means refined texture, with less visible pores and wrinkles. Your skin is less prone to breakouts.

Tips

  • Boost glow with Collagen - Infused with plumping Hydrolyzed Collagen, hydrating Wheat Amino Acids, and smoothing Licorice Root, our Collagen Facial Sheet Mask enhances your natural radiance and supports elastic-feeling skin. It’s not time travel, but it’s just like turning the clock back to more youthful skin with the help of targeted ingredients.
  • Exfoliate - With new skin cells forming, Miracle Clear Exfoliating Cleanser can help the turnover process by removing dead cells to reveal healthy skin underneath. It’s powered by Succinic Acid and Wintergreen Extract for a clarified, smoother-looking complexion.

Phase 3: Ovulation

Hormones

Luteinizing Hormone levels increase to encourage the release of the egg. Once the egg is released into your fallopian tube, estrogen levels dip as progesterone and testosterone levels begin to rise.

Skin

Increased luteinizing hormone can make your skin prone to bacterial overgrowth. Sebaceous gland activity is still low as your Follicular Phase Glow fades into a duller complexion, and pigments in the skin darken.

Tips

  • Brighten skin with Vitamin C - Keep your Week 2 Glow radiant into week 3 and beyond with our Vitamin C Facial Sheet Mask infused with brightening Pomegranate Fruit Extract, exfoliating Fig Fruit Extract, and age-defying Citrus Fruit Extract.
  • Lighten Up - Our Microcrystal Dark Spot Cover delivers Niacinamide, Tranexamic Acid, and Broccoli Extract deep below the surface to visibly brighten the look of dark spots and even out skin tone while keeping skin moisturized. Ideal for those who rely on blemish patches during occasional breakouts.

Phase 4: Luteal

Hormones

Progesterone levels peak to prepare the lining of the uterus for possible pregnancy. They then drop, along with estrogen, below testosterone levels.

Skin

Your skin barrier is weakened, sebum production is up, causing your skin to inflame and pores to compress. This causes an oil buildup that makes your skin increasingly greasy and can lead to breakouts.

Tips

  • Control hot spots with Tea Tree - Antibacterial Tea Tree Leaf Oil, soothing Cica Extract, and healing Chamomile Extract in our Tea Tree Face Sheet Mask help clarify the look of congested skin and support a fresh, balanced complexion.
  • Keep pores clear - During the oil-heavy luteal phase, non-comedogenic products can help reduce surface buildup and support skin that feels more balanced. Commonly Overlooked Skin Changes

Not every change is dramatic. Some are subtle, easy to ignore, and happen like clockwork every cycle. These subtle cues can help you understand what your skin needs before visible concerns appear.

Here are shifts worth paying attention to:

  • A slight change in texture that wasn’t there earlier in the week
  • Redness that becomes more noticeable under certain lighting
  • Skin feeling more sensitive, even with products your skin usually loves
  • A soft glow giving way to a more muted look
  • Areas that appear rougher or drier than usual

These gentle signals help you fine-tune your routine, whether that means reaching for something more hydrating, brightening, or soothing. Monitoring and addressing these signs will help your complexion look smooth, calm, and refreshed through every phase of your cycle.
