Pink Period Blood: What It Means & Is It Normal?

Pink Period Blood: What It Means & Is It Normal?

You love pink as much as the next person, but when you see it as your period blood color, you wonder if it means something is wrong.

Pink period blood is a normal part of almost every person’s period. Normally, it isn’t cause for alarm. Here’s what you need to know about pink period blood and what it means for your overall health.

Pink Period Blood Symptoms

Pink period blood is simply red period blood that has been diluted with other cervical fluid and discharge. The period blood you see may be thicker than bright, red blood, and may have a mucusy texture.

Pink period blood can range from clear-pink to pinkish red. Most frequently, you’ll notice it at the very beginning of your period.

What Does Pink Period Blood Mean?

Pink period blood doesn’t usually indicate there’s a problem with your body or your period. You may experience pink period blood:

  • At the very beginning of your period. Before your period, you may experience normal vaginal discharge. This discharge may initially mix with your period flow and create blood that looks pink.
  • If you’ve just had a baby. After you have a baby, even if you don’t deliver vaginally, you’ll experience vaginal bleeding for several weeks. This bleeding is called lochia, and it may start out bright red in color and change to pink and then dark red and brown.
  • If you have low estrogen. Estrogen helps the lining of your uterus stay intact. If you have low estrogen levels, you can shed some of the lining of your uterus at different types during your monthly cycle. Hormonal birth control that decreases your estrogen levels may cause you to have pink period blood. Perimenopause may also cause your estrogen levels to drop, which can result in pink period blood.
  • You are ovulating. During ovulation (about two weeks after your period) you will experience some discharge. It’s normal to have discharge that is tinted pink during ovulation, although it is more common for your discharge to be white.

Is Pink Period Blood Normal?

It’s completely normal to see pink period blood. It can be a normal part of anyone’s period. If you have other symptoms or complications, you may need to see your doctor.

When To Call a Doctor

In some instances, pink period blood or discharge can indicate an underlying health concern.

Here are some reasons you’d want to see your doctor if you have pink period blood:

  • You are pregnant. Anytime you see bleeding during pregnancy it’s a cause for concern. Although some bleeding can be normal, it’s always best to see your doctor to make sure your pregnancy is still healthy and viable.
  • Your periods are much lighter than normal. If you have incredibly light periods for two months in a row, it’s a good idea to see your doctor. You may have a hormone imbalance that needs to be addressed.
  • You have pain with your period, or during sex. This could be a sign of an ovarian cyst. Many ovarian cysts go away on their own, but you may need medication (usually hormonal birth control) if you have a large cyst.
